5 QUICK HITS

Just a day after its $100 billion compute deal with Nvidia, OpenAI announced that it is planning to build five additional data centers throughout the US as part of Project Stargate. Of the five new sites, Oracle is responsible for developing three across Shackelford County in Texas, New Mexico, and in the Midwest, while SoftBank's remaining two will be built in Ohio and Milam County in Texas. With these new sites accounted for, the planned capacity of OpenAI's $500 billion AI infrastructure project has surged to 7 gigawatts.

Google DeepMind has unveiled its latest pair of AI robotics models that add "agentic capabilities" to AI-driven robots in the physical world. Named Robotics 1.5 and Robotics-ER 1.5, the new additions to the Gemini Robotics family are designed to give robots the ability to reason, plan, and act with greater independence than ever before, similar to "thinking" LLMs today. Robotics 1.5 is a VLA model that turns images and commands into physical actions, while Robotics-ER 1.5, a VLM model, leverages digital tools like Search to build multi-step plans for longer tasks.

Alibaba's shares surged roughly 10% in premarket trading after announcing a partnership with Nvidia and a slew of new products at its annual Apsara Conference. During the conference, the company unveiled plans to expand to Brazil, France, and the Netherlands with new data centers. It additionally debuted the full release of Qwen3-Max, a 1-trillion parameter model of which we saw a preview version, namely Qwen3-Max-Instruct, earlier this month. Together with its $53 billion four-year AI investment plan, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu says that AI will be a core part of its business alongside e-commerce.

Elon Musk's xAI joins the likes of Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in a long list of AI developers selling their AI offerings to the US federal government. As per a recent press release, xAI has secured a contract with the US General Services Administration to license its Grok chatbot to federal agents over the next 18 months at a measly price of $0.42. The deal also includes xAI engineering support for proper implementation and to ensure safe use to avoid any future controversy, such as Grok's not-so-distant "MechaHitler incident."

Enterprise AI startup Cohere has lifted its valuation to $7 billion after it secured $100 million in additional funding in an extension to its oversubscribed $500 million round back in August. Interestingly enough, the extension announcement also came with a surprise partnership with AMD, one of Nvidia's primary competitors, which has been signing deals left and right in the past week. Although its six-year growth has been less impressive than that of competitors like OpenAI or Anthropic, Cohere and its Command series of AI models nevertheless remain prominent in the enterprise market and realm of AI sovereignty.
