☕️ OpenAI's New Model
OpenAI opens the week with a bang as it showcases GPT-4o, the company's latest and most advanced multimodal model to date by far. Though OpenAI has the spotlight, Google has been working with Airtel to bring more cloud and generative AI to India, and NASA sets its sights on spearheading AI development for the good of humanity. Join us at AI Tangle as we untangle this week's happenings in AI.
THE BIG AI STORY
With GPT-4 maintaining dominance for so long, it's only recently that competitors, such as Anthropic with Claude 3 and Google with Gemini 1.5, finally caught up. However, that seems to have been a short-lived victory, as OpenAI fired back with the release of GPT-4o, a multimodal AI model with outstanding benchmark. All of this was exhibited during a grand livestream this Monday, where the company showcased the new improvements and voice capabilities along with dozens of demos.
What did we learn from the livestream?
OpenAI showed off GPT-4o, where the "o" stands for "omni," in a variety of demo videos, from playing rock, paper, scissors in one demo to tutoring someone in math in another demo. Being multimodal, it can process audio, image/video, and text, and it gets impressively showcased in yet another demo, where OpenAI put 2 GPT-4o's together to seamlessly interact with each other and even sing, even if it turns out a bit funny and imperfect. It's also faster, more accurate, and 50% cheaper to use through the API than GPT-4 Turbo. Unlike its predecessor, GPT-4o will be available for free, albeit with some limits, and paid users will have "5x higher" message limits.

According to US officials, the United States and China will meet in Geneva on Tuesday to discuss views on how they view the emerging risks arising from the technology. The two are expected to share views on artificial intelligence as well as their thoughts on international governance. US officials also state that the talks won't be "promoting any form of technical collaboration or cooperating on frontier research in any matter" and that no joint statement was expected afterward.
Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, has partnered with Google Cloud to offer cloud and generative AI products to Indian businesses. The collaboration aims to make use of Airtel's extensive customer base and vast data sets to provide AI solutions, geospatial analytics, location intelligence, and voice analytics among other services. Google, already an investor in Airtel, sees this partnership as a significant step towards accelerating cloud and AI adoption in India.
Buymeacoffee's founder, Jijo Sunny, has developed an AI-powered voice note app called Voicenotes. The app transcribes voice notes, generates summaries, and allows users to ask questions about their past notes. It also offers features like note tagging, title regeneration using AI, and note reformatting into various formats. Currently, the app is available on both iOS and Android, but Voicenotes has ambitious plans underway to extend its functionality across platforms and integrate it with smartwatches.
David Salvagnini, who was serving as NASA's chief data officer, has recently been appointed by NASA to be its first chief artificial intelligence officer. NASA isn't a stranger to implementing AI as the organization already uses the technology in its advanced climate modeling work for studying global warming. Salvagnini, however, will lead NASA's efforts to responsibly use AI for the benefit of humanity and will map out NASA's vision for AI development and usage.
Alaska Airlines is testing an AI-powered flight search tool that suggests destinations based on user interests and helps them reap loyalty points. The tool, designed using Microsoft and OpenAI technology, was released in mid-April for 5% of website visitors and will be available to everyone in June. Plans include a broader trip planning tool and an AI assistant to enhance the shopping experience. The airline is also looking to support startups modernizing the transportation industry by investing $2.5 billion in passenger technology upgrades.
SoftBank has recently reported a net profit of $1.5 billion for the quarter ending in March, exceeding expectations, as it shifts focus to AI investment. Despite a full-year net loss, the company is bulking up to go big on AI, with its UK subsidiary Arm as the centerpiece for the venture. SoftBank is selling more than it's investing, accumulating funds for future AI investments, as shown when it recently led a $1 billion investment in Wayve, the hotshot UK self-driving car startup.
