☕️ Liquid Glass, Offline Apple Intelligence and More @ Apple WWDC 2025

Apple's annual WWDC 2025 went live earlier this week, bringing with it updates to all of its OS platforms, a new glossy design language, Apple Intelligence support for developers, and more.

Our other key takeaways include:

  • OpenAI hits a milestone of $10 billion in ARR off the back of ChatGPT's growth, double from last year

  • Meta looks to invest roughly $10 billion into AI data labeling startup Scale AI as the pair enter talks

  • Pennsylvania receives $20 billion in AI investment as Amazon looks to build two new AI data centers

Join us at AI Tangle as we untangle this week's happenings in AI!

THE BIG AI STORY

Credits: Apple

The build-up to Apple's next event has come to an end, as its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 conference went live on Monday this week, bringing a host of reveals with it. These include a plethora of platform OS updates, from a unified yearly naming scheme (iOS 26, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, etc.) to its latest sleek, 3D-centric design language dubbed Liquid Glass - but that's not all.

What else did Apple's keynote reveal?

As for AI-related news, Apple will now allow developers to directly tap into its on-device Apple Intelligence via the Foundation Models framework, enabling offline AI use without inferring any API costs or risking privacy by making calls to the cloud. It also unveiled the "Shortcuts" app, which allows users to do more or less the same thing, along with integrating ChatGPT into Image Playground.

However, Apple's Siri got the short end of the stick as the digital assistant received nothing during the keynote, delaying Apple's promises of a more AI-centric, "personalized" Siri further. As an industry giant lagging far behind others such as Microsoft and Google in the AI space, Apple's WWDC 2025 does not seem to massively improve its position.

We have comprised a concise list of what we believe to be the other, more significant unveils:

5 QUICK HITS

OpenAI has hit a major milestone off the back of ChatGPT's ferocious rise, reaching a reported $10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) - that's nearly double from its $5.5 billion just a year earlier. Aside from its consumer ChatGPT offering, an OpenAI spokesperson credits the figure to the company's business products and API usage. Despite a $5 billion loss in 2024, the company’s explosive growth secured a $40 billion funding round at a valuation of roughly 30x its revenue. Now, OpenAI serves more than 500 million weekly active users and three million business subscribers, targeting $125 billion in revenue by 2029.

A Sunday article by Bloomberg revealed that Meta could potentially be in talks with US-based AI startup Scale AI for an investment worth upwards of a little over $10 billion. Founded in 2016, Scale AI is a $14 billion valuation data labeling company that improves the quality of training sets that AI models are used to train on and is backed by Nvidia, Amazon, and Meta itself. Details on the talks are scarce, but insiders told Bloomberg that the deal's terms have yet to be finalized and remain still in flux.

Amazon has stated that it will invest another $20 billion to build two more AI data centers, this time in Pennsylvania in Salem Township and Falls Township, as announced in a news release on Monday. The project aims to create 1,250 high-skill roles, from data-center engineers to network specialists, and "support thousands more in its AWS center supply chain," along with plans for local workforce development programs. A portion of the Salem Township campus will draw power directly from the nearby Susquehanna nuclear plant. However, this arrangement is currently under review by the FERC.

The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has partnered with Nvidia to create what they call the "Supercharged Sandbox," which will allow British banks to experiment with AI using Nvidia's compute AI Enterprise Software line of products. TDebuting in October, the initiative will provide participating firms with "better data, technical expertise, and regulatory support" during the discovery and experimentation phases of AI development. The FCA aims to help banks innovate responsibly by balancing rapid deployment of such tools with clear emphasis on privacy, security, and fraud prevention.

Together with the likes of Poolside, Hugging Face, and academic institutions, AI research organization EleutherAI has released an 8 TB set of fully licensed and public-domain text excerpts for training AI models. Dubbed Common Pile v0.1, EleutherAI claims it to be one of the largest collections of its kind, having already been used to build two new 7B-parameter models, Comma v0.1-1T and 2T, that match proprietary counterparts across many fields. The set was built over two years with legal expert guidance and public sources and demonstrates that carefully curated open data can rival models trained on unlicensed content.
