5 QUICK HITS
Google dodges a $2.5 trillion bullet as a federal judge rules against forcing it to sell Chrome
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta has spared Google from being forced to sell its Chrome browser in an antitrust case by the U.S. Department of Justice, instead opting to order Google to share its closely guarded search data with rivals. Although the federal judge barred Google from making any exclusivity deals, the ruling stopped short of banning any default search engine deals, such as Google's $20 billion one with Apple. With AI reshaping the digital landscape, Judge Amit Mehta ruled that a forced divestiture of Chrome would be far too "messy and highly risky" a move.
OpenAI has made one of its biggest acquisitions to date as it bought out software testing startup Statsig for $1.1 billion in an all-stock deal. As OpenAI looks to flesh out its Applications unit, the deal includes bringing over Statsig's founder and CEO, Vijaye Raji, as the chief technology officer for the new unit, reporting directly to its CEO, Fidji Simo, Instacart's former CEO. The deal is pending regulatory review as of writing, but once finalized, Statsig will continue to operate and serve its customers independently.
Anthropic's Series F has reportedly netted $13 billion in funding for one of Silicon Valley's largest AI startups, led by Iconiq, Fidelity Management & Research Co., and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Valued now at $183 billion post-money, Anthropic's announcement also reported that its run-rate revenue had reached more than $5 billion as of August, roughly 5 times its number at the start of the year. Anthropic's valuation has been only uphill since the debut of Claude in March 2023, and resounding investor confidence means it shows no signs of slowing down.
France's Mistral AI brings a new memory function and a slew of MCP-powered connectors to its Le Chat chatbot, as announced in a recent blog post. The update brings Le Chat to over 20 enterprise platforms, including Databricks, Snowflake, GitHub, Atlassian, Outlook, etc., while Mistral's "Memories" function enables Le Chat to store relevant context across sessions and even lets users import their ChatGPT memories. Although the feature's self-reported 86% retrieval accuracy leaves room for improvement, both updates are available for free for all users.
Just a day after Google was spared from being forced to sell its Chrome browser, Atlassian has announced that it is buying out The Browser Company for $610 million in cash. Atlassian's deal with the developer of AI browsers Arc and Dia aims to "reimagine the browser for knowledge work" as they begin work on building out an AI-powered browser optimized for SaaS applications. While the deal is expected to close in Atlassian's fiscal Q2 2026, The Browser Company will remain independent after it and continue to develop Dia under Atlassian.
