☕️ GitHub's Software Development Renaissance
From autonomous F1 racing to AI-native platform debuts, the week starts diverse. GitHub introduces Copilot Workspace to elevate the software engineering experience and how developers interact with their tools, while Microsoft's CEO goes on a Southeast Asia tour to bring AI to the East, and the Financial Times inks a deal with OpenAI to license its content for AI model training. Join us at AI Tangle as we untangle this week's happenings in AI.
THE BIG AI STORY
GitHub, the developer platform that houses the world's code, recently announced Copilot Workspace, a Copilot-native (their own AI industry-leading coding assistant) development environment to assist developers in brainstorming, planning, building, testing, and running code. Jonathan Carter, the head of GitHub Next and the company's software R&D team, presents Copilot Workspace as an evolution to modern software engineering.
What's Copilot Workspace about?
Copilot Workspace uses "Copilot-powered agents" to help developers from the very beginning of an idea or task to the finalization of a project. It can build a plan to squash a bug or implement a new feature, making use of the repository's comments, issue replies, and overall codebase to make its next move. Developers get suggested code for the bug fix or feature, along with a list of things they need to validate and test that code, which can be directly run in the Workspace and shared with team members.

6 QUICK HITS
Just recently, the first race of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) took place on the Yas Marina Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Formula 1 track, and the results were bittersweet. The driverless Dallara Super Formula racers struggled from qualifying time trails to race day to finish even a single lap, either by randomly juking, spinning out, turning into a wall, or just flat-out refusing to pass a crashed car due to a yellow flag. Despite the struggles, organizers remain optimistic about autonomous racing, as the eight-lap race concluded with Tum crossing the chequered flag about an hour after the green lights.
OpenAI has expanded the availability of its Memory feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers in a recent blog post, allowing the AI to remember user preferences and learn from similar conversations. The feature was teased as far back as February of this year when a small user base had time to fiddle with it. Now, OpenAI is releasing it worldwide, though ChatGPT Plus members in Europe or Korea will be left out for reasons unknown. The GPT Store, custom GPTs, ChatGPT Enterprise, and Teams will also be getting Memory, though the company did not specify when.
OpenAI has signed a deal with The Financial Times to license its content for AI model development and to enhance the ChatGPT chatbot. The agreement, which follows similar deals with the Associated Press, Axel Springer, Le Monde, and Prisa Media, will allow ChatGPT to answer queries with summaries linked to the newspaper. The partnership aims to develop new AI products and features for FT readers, a trend on the rise among media outlets.
Meta's automated ad tool, Advantage Plus, is reportedly misfiring, causing significant overspending on ad budgets and underperforming in sales. The issue began on Valentine's Day and has continued for weeks, with costs per impression (CPMs) inflating to roughly 10 times higher than normal. Small businesses have been particularly affected, with some considering leaving Meta's platforms due to the lack of transparency and accountability as its executives tout that the tool "is functioning as it should."
Returning from a visit to Indonesia, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, stated that the company will invest a total of $1.7 billion into the country's cloud and AI infrastructure over four years. Nadella said that he wishes Microsoft to "lead this wave in terms of AI infrastructure that's needed" and that the company's investments will "bring the latest and greatest AI infrastructure to Indonesia." However, his Southeast Asia trip isn't over just yet with visits bound to Malaysia and Thailand later this week.
Following Apple's talks with Google about integrating Gemini into iOS 18, it seems like the tech giant has recently also been discussing with OpenAI for on-device chatbot tech. According to Bloomberg, Apple was already in talks with OpenAI earlier this year, but now those talks have been reopened, leaving room for speculation with many believing it to be for iOS 18. However, no deal has been reached as of yet, and we may not hear more until WWDC 2024.
