☕️ Elon's & xAI's Plans to Build The "Gigafactory of Compute"

Elon Musk and xAI make waves in the AI world as the company CEO redirects Tesla-reserved AI chips from Nvidia to xAI instead to build "the world's largest supercomputer." Meanwhile, news of Apple's soon-to-arrive WWDC 2024 circulates through the internet, Nvidia overtakes the latter in market cap, becoming a $3 trillion company spearheading AI hardware, and Humane warns users that their Ai Pin's batteries might catch fire. Join us at AI Tangle as we untangle this week's happenings in AI.

THE BIG AI STORY

CEO of Tesla and xAI, Elon Musk, recently reportedly told Nvidia staff to send Tesla's order of H100 chips over to xAI, which will likely cause months of delays for the automaker's own Tesla's Texas Gigafactory to develop autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. After writing a post on X/Twitter about how Tesla would $10 billion this year "in combined training and inference AI," many Tesla shareholders question whether Musk is capable of fulfilling his obligations to Tesla while running so many other companies. But what's the meaning behind doing this?

Soon after, it was revealed that Musk intended for xAI to build its "gigafactory of compute, the world's largest supercomputer," as said by the president of the Greater Memphis Chamber. The purpose of this supercomputer, which will be built in Memphis, Tennesse, is expected to be for training the next Grok version, xAI's standout chatbot, according to an investor meeting in May by Musk. All of those chips need to come from somewhere, and many believe Elon's move to redirect Tesla's batch of Nvidia H100 chips to xAI could be the answer, albeit a controversial one.

6 QUICK HITS

Apple's World Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024 is fast approaching, and there are a lot of expectations on the company's shoulders. The four-day conference, which will last from June 10th to June 14th, is expected to sprinkle AI onto everything following company CEO Tim Cook's May comments about "breaking new ground" on generative AI. Many of those updates will likely also get added to macOS 15, including those related to Siri, Notes, Safari, and some office apps.

The poster child of AI hardware, Nvidia, recently overtook Apple to become the second most valuable company in the world, sitting at a market cap of slightly over $3 trillion. Humane, the makers of the not-so-successful Ai Pin, has recently asked customers to stop using its Ai Pin egg-shaped charging case due to it potentially bursting into flames. Humane states that this concern stems from the subpar battery quality from its suppliers and is offering two months of its $24 subscription service on the house as a consolation. At a time when Humane's founders are reportedly seeking potential buyers for the company, just months after launching its first product, it's not a good look.

Earlier this week, users of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Perplexity experienced outages lasting varying amounts of time. ChatGPT went from facing a multi-hour outage to another one not long afterward, which, this time, included Claude and Perplexity, though their outages were more swiftly resolved. As of writing, there is no explanation from any of the mentioned AI providers about the unusual situation, as investigations are ongoing.
