Anthropic dethrones GPT-4 and Gemini with its first multimodal model, Claude 3

Anthropic, the AI development startup backed by Google and hundreds of millions in funding, announced on Monday the release of the company's latest, most capable, and its first-ever multimodal model yet, dubbed Claude 3 - and it's got a bone to pick with GPT-4 and Gemini. Coming as a family of models embodying literature, Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus and Sonnet are available now, with Haiku following later this year.

What do we know?

The three models - Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku - are categorized based on their sizes and prices, listed in descending order through literary terms. Opus is the most advanced and robust variant, capable of achieving higher benchmarks than GPT-4 and Gemini Ultra 1.0 but not Gemini Pro 1.5. Being multimodal, Claude 3 can process up to 20 images simultaneously, allowing it to contrast and compare. However, Anthropic has disabled Claude 3 from identifying people, and the model can't generate images of its own. Claude 3 also comes with an impressive 200,000-token context window with an upgrade to 1,000,000 down the line, putting it on the same pedestal as Gemini 1.5 Pro.

OpenAI and Sam Altman get sued by Elon Musk for abandoning its mission for profit

In a filing to the California Superior Court, Elon Musk sued OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, for abandoning the startup's original purpose of an open-source, non-profit AI development firm that would benefit humanity. One point of contention is the release of GPT-4, which Musk claims was essentially released as a product of Microsoft, one of OpenAI's core backers. Musk is also aiming for GPT-4 and ​Q*, a potential artificial general intelligence (AGI)​, to be excluded from Microsoft's OpenAI license, stating that developing AGI behind closed doors poses grave risks.

AMD's China-focused AI chips get blocked by U.S. regulations for being too powerful

According to a report by Bloomberg News, American semiconductor company AMD was denied permission by the U.S. Commerce Department to sell its AI processor designed for China. Despite AMD designing the AI chips for a lower performance metric compared to what the company sells outside of China, the processor remains too powerful for current U.S. export restrictions. U.S. officials stated that AMD must obtain a license from Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security to sell the chip to China, though it remains unclear if AMD will apply.

Groq acquires Definitive Technologies in forming a new business unit

Groq, the company behind the lightning-fast AI platform with its custom hardware, recently announced that it is forming a new division called Grog Systems, which will focus on expanding its customer and developer ecosystem. Groq also acquired Definitive Technologies, a firm that offers business-focused AI solutions, whose CEO, Sunny Madra, is now in charge of GroqCloud. As demand for custom AI chips slowly rises, Groq aims to establish itself as a serious contender before its competition.

India backtracks on its anti-regulation stance revolving around AI

India's Ministry of Electronics and IT recently issued an advisory mandating government approval for tech firms before launching new AI models. Aimed at preventing bias and safeguarding electoral integrity, the move signals a significant change in India's AI regulation stance from its previous anti-regulation one. Industry executives express concerns over the potential impact on India's global presence, while Silicon Valley leaders, like a16z partner Martin Cassao, criticize the policy shift amid recent tensions with Google's Gemini.

Wix debuts its new prompt-based website-building chatbot

Wix, an online website builder, recently announced the release of its Wix AI Website Builder, a chatbot that promises to build basic websites in seconds, all from just text prompts. The chatbot takes user input as data, and within the next few seconds, the chatbot will create a website depending on the information fed to it, allowing users to edit page elements manually afterward. The Wix AI Website Builder also leverages out-of-the-box models like OpenAI's DALL-E for AI-generated images and ChatGPT for text prompts.

Chinese researchers aim to create an open-source copy of OpenAI's Sora

Researchers from China's Peking University and Shenzhen-based AI company Rabbitpre have reportedly joined hands in the Open-Sora plan, aiming to reproduce a simple and scalable version of OpenAI's eyebrow-raising text-to-video generation model Sora. The project is available on ​GitHub ​and showcases videos ranging from 3 to 24 seconds in various resolutions. The Chinese research team is currently aiming to refine their technology to produce higher resolutions, using more data and hardware.
