THE BIG AI STORY

If Claude 3.5 Sonnet wasn't making big enough waves already and giving competitors a run for their money, Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant, recently released an update that introduces new features to bring collaborative work to Claude. Released about a week earlier, Artifact is being joined up Projects as part of Anthropic's vision for Claude to create AI systems that work alongside people and meaningfully enhance their workflows.

What does Projects bring to Claude?

The Projects feature includes a 200K token context window and the ability to tailor Claude's responses through custom instructions. A separate Artifacts window allows users to generate content alongside conversations, which is particularly useful for developers. Team users can share conversation snapshots to improve collaboration and innovation. Anthropic emphasizes privacy and plans to integrate Claude with popular applications in the future for workplaces to better leverage Anthropic's AI for enhanced collaboration. Currently, Projects is available to both Claude Pro and Team subscribers.

6 QUICK HITS

OpenAI recently announced that it had delayed the release of ChatGPT's advanced Voice Mode, a highly anticipated feature following a slew of demos weeks prior, originally scheduled for late June, to sometime in July due to technical challenges. The rollout for all ChatGPT Plus subscribers may not happen until fall, depending on how safety and reliability checks go, says OpenAI. Despite the disappointing delay, the new video and screen-sharing capabilities, including solving math problems from pictures and explaining device settings, are still on track for their release dates.

Vertex AI, Google's Cloud development platform for building services using Google's infrastructure and models, is getting a boost in accuracy to its AI-generated content, as noted in an announcement by Google. The update includes grounding with third-party datasets from providers like Moody's and Thomson Reuters, available in Q3, and a "high-fidelity mode" powered by a highly specialized version of Gemini 1.5 Flash that uses corporate datasets for more precise outputs. Vertex AI's Vector Search also now supports hybrid searches combining text and image references.

Figma announced major updates at its Config conference and in a blog post, including a UI redesign and more generative AI features to its design suite. The AI features range from quickly creating app designs and prototypes from text prompts to a new Figma Slides tool that gives users built-in presentation capabilities to enhance the work of both beginner and veteran designers. These AI features will be part of a limited beta run with a waitlist at no charge for the duration.

Google is introducing the Gemini AI side panel to premium subscription users across its productivity tools, including Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Drive. In Gmail, users will be able to draft emails, receive suggested responses, and ask questions using Gemini. The side panel in Docs assists with content writing, summarization, and brainstorming, while in Slides, it generates new slides and custom images. Finally, in Sheets, Gemini will help organize data, create tables, and perform other tasks.

Formation Bio, an AI-driven drug development startup formerly known as TrialSpark and backed by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, recently raised $372 million in a Series D funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, bringing its total funding to over $600 million. Co-founded by partners Benjamine Liu and Linhao Zhang, their startup aims to streamline clinical trials and drug development using AI. Formation has three drug candidates in its current clinical pipeline, including an eczema treatment in phase 3 trials, the last one before a drug is submitted to regulatory authorities.

Etched, a startup founded by a trio of Harvard dropouts, has raised $120 million to develop an AI chip called Sohu, aiming to compete with AI hardware wonderchild Nvidia. The chip specializes in transformer architectures used in advanced AI models like ChatGPT, claiming that Sohu will be more efficient than general-purpose GPUs for specific AI tasks. Now consisting of 35 employees, Etched plans to demonstrate its technology later this year. In spite of facing stiff competition from industry bigwigs, Etched believes its specialized approach could revolutionize AI computing.
