THE BIG AI STORY
In a post on X/Twitter on Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent the world into a quick stir as he gave the first insights into the company's roadmap for the long-awaited GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models, with the former being the company's last-ever non-reasoning model. Altman described that many are not fond of the complicated model picker and that OpenAI is thus looking at a unified system that could automatically surmise which model would be best for any given task - OpenAI wishes AI to "just work" for you. However, this all has more sinister implications for o3.
What is going on with o3?
Despite o3 being poised for a launch as early as between February and March, according to an interview with company CPO Kevin Weil just weeks ago, Altman is now announcing that o3 is no longer being planned to be shipped as a standalone model, effectively postponing it indefinitely. Instead, Altman says that they will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of the company's technology, such as its video, search, and deep research offerings, which importantly includes o3.
6 QUICK HITS
Adobe is launching its boldest monetization attempt yet by beginning to offer standalone subscriptions for its Firefly AI models, covering image, vector, and video generation. Available via a redesigned website and integrated into Premiere Pro Beta, the service offers plans starting at $9.99/month for Firefly Standard and $29.99/month for Firefly Pro, along with a Firefly Premium subscription in the works. Adobe aims to differentiate its offerings with IP-friendly, commercially safe training data while addressing creative professionals’ needs for practical AI tools.
Scarlett Johansson is calling on US lawmakers to urgently pass legislation to limit the use of AI after a deepfake video of her and other Jewish celebrities circulated online. The video saw Johansson and the aforementioned celebrities wearing a provocative t-shirt with "Kanye" and a Star of David-adorned middle finger, which has intensified concerns over AI-enabled hate speech. Johansson, a vocal critic of AI misuse, stressed that "the potential for hate speech multiplied by AI is a far greater threat" and called for bipartisan action to not allow things to get out of hand.
Thomas Reuters, the parent company of news agency Reuters, recently won a landmark ruling as federal Delaware judge Stephanos Bibas ruled that defunct legal research firm Ross Intelligence unlawfully copied Thomson Reuters' proprietary content to build a competing AI legal platform, stating that the copying did not constitute fair use. This decision marks the first US ruling on fair use in AI-related copyright litigation, setting a precedent for other such cases.
Alibaba Group's shares surged by 8.5% in Hong Kong on Wednesday after reports emerged that the Chinese giant partnered with Apple to integrate its Qwen AI model into iPhones in China. This deal, seen by some as a validation or recognition of Alibaba's AI capabilities, could help Apple challenge local competitors like Huawei and Oppo in the Chinese market. The move boosted investor confidence amid a broader re-evaluation of Chinese tech stocks and marks Alibaba's best one-day performance since March 2023.
British semiconductor company Arm, majorly owned by SoftBank, is set to begin manufacturing its own chips this year after inking a deal with Meta as one of its first key customers. The chip, expected to serve as a customizable server CPU for large data centers, marks a strategic shift for Arm from licensing its blueprints to producing hardware in-house. The company says it will outsource the actual production, with the first chip slated for unveiling as early as summer this year, potentially turning some of its current customers into competitors.
Microsoft has expanded its renewable energy portfolio by adding another 389 megawatts from three solar projects by EDP Renewables North America as it ramps up its power budget to support its growing cloud and AI operations. With nearly 20 gigawatts already under contract, this latest near-400-megawatt addition contributes about 2% to its overall capacity. Microsoft's rapid deployment of solar power is also contributing to its pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030.
